Information on how to contact the Hatfield Police Department

Like most cities and towns in Massachusetts, Hatfield has elected to create (and approve by town vote) several laws called "by-laws." Although these laws may vary from one town to the next, it is the responsibility of all citizens who work, live, visit or travel through the town to know and obey these laws, as they are just as "real" and enforceable as the regular Massachusetts General Laws. These laws can be enforced by any police officer that has police jurisdiction in the Town of Hatfield, including (but not limited to) the Hatfield Police, the Massachusetts State Police and the Environmental Police.

To assist in making the public aware of these laws, posted here are all of the current Town of Hatfield by-laws, listed alphabetically by offense. The tables on the following pages are divided into three columns. In the first column, a brief description of the by-law is listed. In the second column, the relevant Town Article, Section, and Sub-Section(s) (if applicable) are listed. The letter "A" precedes the Article number and the letter "S" precedes the Section and Sub-Section(s) numbers. The third column lists the fine associated with each By-Law. For example:

Violation Article & Section Fine
Motor vehicle, Parking in designated handicapped space without authority (public or private property) A4 S4.05 (H)
$15
(can be towed)

In the above example, the by-law listed is a motor vehicle offense. The complete text of this by-law can be found in the Town of Hatfield by-laws Article 4, Section 4.05, subsection H. The penalty is a $15 ticket, and the vehicle may be towed. For easy searching, all of the by-laws are listed multiple times, putting different keywords first so they can be found under multiple letters of the alphabet. The by-law listed above can be found under "H" for "Handicapped space," under "M" for "Motor vehicle" and also "P" for "Parking." This should facilitate finding specific by-laws.

To view the by-laws, choose a range in the alphabet from the table below:

Hatfield By-Laws
A-C D-F G-I
J-L M-O P-R
S-U V-X Y-Z

If you would like to read the complete text of a particular by-law, copies are available for viewing and/or purchase at the Hatfield Town Hall, Monday through Friday between 8:30am and 4:30pm.

NOTE: All parking by-laws carry a $15.00 fine. Motorists receiving a parking ticket in Hatfield must pay or contest the ticket within twenty (20) days or their registration may be subject to non-renewal and the fine becomes $20.00. Motorists may pay or contest tickets at:

Hatfield Town Hall, Town Clerk's office
59 Main Street
Hatfield, MA 01038
