Hatfield Police Employment Opportunities

So you want to be a police officer? The field of law enforcement is an exciting, rewarding and challenging career choice. Every day, a police officer encounters a variety of complex situations that he or she must be able to resolve appropriately and usually at a moment's notice. In addition, police officers must diligently monitor the laws, rules and regulations that the Massachusetts Courts and Legislature constantly create, repeal, amend and redefine. Because of the great demands the job puts on officers, there are mandatory certifications, skills and training required to become a police officer in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. At a minimum, a candidate for the position of police officer in the Town of Hatfield must:

  • have a high school diploma or General Education Development (G.E.D.) certificate
  • be at least nineteen (19) years of age on date of appointment
  • have a valid Massachusetts Class D (or higher) driver's license and a good driving record
  • be able to obtain a valid Massachusetts Class A firearms license
  • never have been convicted of a felony or any crime classified as domestic assault & battery
  • never have been convicted of a violation of a "refrain from abuse" restraining order in any state
  • never have been dishonorably discharged from any branch of the United States Armed Forces
  • be a United States citizen on date of appointment
  • not smoke or use tobacco products
  • pass a physical examination

In addition to the above requirements, all candidates must attend and successfully complete a Massachusetts Municipal Police Training Committee Police Academy and all required training therein, as well as complete a post-Academy field training program within the department under the supervision of field training officers. All candidates will be subjected to an intensive background investigation as well as multiple interviews with (but not limited to) the police chief, lieutenant(s), patrol sergeant(s), field training officer(s) and the Board of Selectmen. Once employed, all officers are required to complete annual training and recertification of many different job skills.
